Over the weekend of the 12/13th of September the Great North Swim took place at Lake Windermere. Representing and raising money on behalf of the club were three of the clubs senior swimmers, Stuart Taylor, Paul Camden and Ashley Turner.
The Great North Swim is a one mile open water swim in England’s largest Lake, Windermere. Following its launch in September 2008 the event has become world renowned, having been voted 5th in the Top 100 Open Water Swims in the World. This year’s swim attracted in excess of 6000 swimmers!
The Great North Swim is part of Great Swim, a new series of mass participation televised events, attracting some of the best swimmers in the world. Swimmers of all ages and abilities from elite to beginners took part to take on the one mile challenge against the stunning backdrop of the Lake District National Park.
Our swimmers competed on the Sunday with a race day water temperature of a chilly 15.3 degrees Celsius! Stuart took to the water first in the 11am wave - swimming in just his Speedos as he is an experienced open water swimmer - completing the event in a time of 27mins and 18seconds - an excellent effort from Stuart which saw him come within a minute of his Personal Best and come 321st overall.
The two remaining swimmers Ashley and Paul swam in the final wave of the event starting at 3.30pm. Both swimmers made use of the finest wetsuits money could buy and both completed their first open water event in times of 25mins 58seconds coming in 192nd place, and 29mins and 17seconds coming in 599 place.
A very big thank you to everybody who sponsored us! Please take the time to look at the photos, and keep your eyes out for us on the television coverage of the events to be shown on Channel four in the autumn.
